8.5 Understanding the Menus

8.51 The Microdot Menu

Check for new mail logs onto your POP3 mailbox and collects any mail available.

A GUI will then appear which will show the transfer of mail into your account. Microdot-II will delete all mail on the server if you set this option within the settings.

Check for new news logs onto your news server and collects news for any newsgroups you have subscribe to. A GUI will appear and monitor the collection of news which is similar to the mail transfer GUI as shown above. If you have any newsgroups which (currently) have no news messages you will be presented with a GUI which asks whether you want to download "all articles" or the "last 100" - last 100 is recommended or transfer will take a long time!

You will now be presented with a GUI the shows you the transfer of news per newsgroup.

Check for news & mail this will carry out both the above tasks - checking for new mail and news. Hotkey: Amiga-N

Send queued messages when you create a new message you can choose whether you want to send it or queue (to send at a later date). If you have any queued messages this option will send these messages. Hotkey: Amiga-S

Help... if you select this option the online AmigaGuide help file will be launched. Hotkey: HELP

Tip Of The Day this option brings up the Tip Of The Day (TOTD) GUI which offers you quick tips about using Microdot-II. See TOTD for more information.

You can set the topic for the mail folder (basically a longer version of the group name). Select a signature for the group - the signatures are created within the settings. Auto expire will automatically delete mails from your folder after a certain time period. ie. "auto expire after 30 days" will delete and mail/news that is over 30 days old.

Information about filter option can be found here!

Create new newsgroup... allows you to create a newsgroup "by hand" (ie. without using the group manager. If, however, your ISP does not support this newsgroup, you will not receive any news!

Remove group(s)... remove a group from the group list. Hotkey: DEL

Subscribe to group(s) you can subscribe to a newsgroup within the groups list. Say, for example, you had unsubscribed previously, you can subscribe at any time with this option. You can tell if a newsgroup has been subscribed as Microdot will insert an S in the next box after the newsgroup name.

Unsubscribe from group(s) when you select a newsgroup(s) from the group manager you automatically subscribe to those groups. If, however, you decide you have had enough (maybe temporarily) you can unsubscribe with this option. A U will be placed in the box next to the newsgroup name. The next time you go to collect the latest news, unsubscribed newsgroups will be ignored.

Group manager... stores all the newsgroups available from your ISP. This is where you select new groups for subscription.
